Our Fabrics

Fabric choice sits at the foundation of every King & Tuckfield collection. Materials are selected for how they perform over time, holding their shape, improving with wear, and supporting garments designed for repeated use rather than short-term relevance. This approach ensures each piece remains practical, considered, and worn as part of everyday life rather than reserved for occasion or trend.

Merino Wool

Merino wool has always been central to King & Tuckfield because it supports garments designed for repeated wear across settings.

Naturally breathable, odour and fire resistant, and a natural temperature regulator, merino allows structure without stiffness and comfort without compromise.

The fibre also offers natural UV protection and is fully biodegradable. Grown entirely naturally by merino sheep and not engineered in any way, it reflects a material approach based on longevity rather than short-term performance claims.

We source our merino wool from New Zealand, working with farms our co-founder Yannis has visited personally. The process is carefully regulated, with animal welfare treated as a priority throughout.

For these reasons, merino aligns closely with King & Tuckfield’s principles of honesty, integrity, and longevity. Read more about our trip to New Zealand farms to discover the full story of how this material moves from sheep to shop.

Denim

Denim has formed part of King & Tuckfield’s identity from the outset because it supports garments designed to age through wear rather than rely on finish or stretch. Constructed from 100% cotton with no elastane, the fabric holds its shape while softening over time, allowing each piece to develop character without losing structure.

This approach aligns denim more closely with tailoring than casualwear. Through considered pattern-cutting and construction, the fabric is used to create clean, relaxed silhouettes intended for long-term use rather than seasonal relevance. The durability of denim and its ability to improve with wear makes it one of the most enduring materials in a wardrobe. Rather than being replaced, it is designed to remain, adapting to the wearer over time.

Our denim is sourced from a small Italian mill that works closely with local independent weavers, maintaining a slower, more traditional approach to fabric production. This relationship prioritises quality, consistency, and longevity over scale, ensuring the material supports garments made to be worn for years.

The fabric’s presence within the collection is also rooted in personal history. Stacey’s father worked in the Yorkshire mines, where denim functioned as a uniform of necessity, valued for its toughness and reliability. That legacy informs King & Tuckfield’s continued approach to denim: practical, enduring, and shaped by use rather than trend.

CUPRO

Cupro is used at King & Tuckfield to introduce fluidity, lightness, and ease into garments designed for everyday wear. Smooth against the skin and naturally breathable, the fabric allows pieces to move freely while remaining practical in use rather than delicate in nature.

Derived from cotton linter, a by-product of cotton production, cupro makes use of fibres that would otherwise be discarded. Through a process similar to that used for TENCEL™, these fibres are regenerated into a soft, lightweight fabric with a refined finish. Cupro is biodegradable and sourced from a mill operating a closed-loop system, ensuring material regeneration is matched by responsible production. The fabric is also naturally hypoallergenic and does not require dry cleaning, allowing garments to be hand washed, line dried, and aired between wears.

Often described as a silk alternative, cupro offers a similar fluid handle without the fragility or maintenance associated with traditional silk. This makes it well suited to garments intended to be worn regularly rather than reserved for special occasions.

Linen

Linen is used at King & Tuckfield for garments designed to perform in warmer conditions while retaining structure and longevity. Naturally breathable and hypoallergenic, the fibre regulates body temperature while offering greater strength and abrasion resistance than cotton, supporting pieces intended for repeated wear.

Linen’s behaviour over time is central to its appeal. Post-wash creases and natural crumpling are not treated as imperfections, but as part of how the fabric settles and improves with use, allowing garments to soften and drape more naturally rather than require constant maintenance.

This combination of durability, comfort, and ease aligns linen with King & Tuckfield’s approach to material-led design: fabrics selected not for perfection at first wear, but for how they adapt and endure as part of everyday life.

Tencel

TENCEL™ is used at King & Tuckfield for garments that require breathability, fluidity, and comfort across changing conditions. Naturally soft against the skin and highly effective at moisture management, the fibre allows pieces to remain cool in warmer weather while retaining warmth when temperatures drop.

Produced from sustainably sourced wood pulp, TENCEL™ is a form of regenerated cellulose fibre created using a closed-loop system that recycles solvents and minimises waste. This process distinguishes it from conventional viscose or modal, supporting material regeneration without compromising fabric performance.

The fabric’s smooth handle and long fibre structure give it a refined surface that works particularly well for printed garments, allowing colour and pattern to sit cleanly without stiffness. For this reason, our hand-painted designs are digitised and printed directly at the same specialist facility in the Netherlands where the fabric is produced, reducing unnecessary transport and maintaining consistency from fibre to finished cloth.

This combination of comfort, adaptability, and considered production aligns TENCEL™ with King & Tuckfield’s material-led approach: fabrics selected for how they behave in wear, not simply how they are made.

LIGHTWEIGHT WOOL

Lightweight wool is used at King & Tuckfield for garments that require structure without weight. Naturally breathable and temperature regulating, the fabric supports pieces designed to move easily between seasons while retaining their form through repeated wear.

Our lightweight merino wool is produced in Portugal at a single vertical facility where spinning, weaving, dyeing, and finishing take place under one roof. This integrated process allows for consistent quality control and a clear understanding of how the fabric will behave once constructed into garments.
With nearly a century of textile production behind it, the mill’s experience ensures the wool is finished to balance softness, resilience, and longevity.

This approach aligns with King & Tuckfield’s material philosophy: fabrics selected not for immediate impact, but for how reliably they perform as part of everyday dress.

ORGANIC COTTON

Cotton forms the backbone of King & Tuckfield’s everyday garments due to its balance of breathability, durability, and ease of care. Naturally hypoallergenic and low maintenance, the fibre supports pieces designed for regular wear while retaining structure and comfort over time.

Our organic cotton is sourced from an Italian mill with nearly a century of textile expertise, allowing for consistent quality and reliable performance in wear. Certified to OEKO-TEX® standards, the fabric is produced without harmful chemicals, ensuring it remains suitable for prolonged contact with the skin.

Cotton is often used alone or woven in combination with linen, merging the softness of cotton with linen’s added texture and abrasion resistance. This considered approach to material selection allows garments to balance comfort with resilience rather than rely on synthetic reinforcement.
Whether working with pure cotton or blended fabrics, materials are purchased in small, exact quantities to minimise waste and maintain control over quality.

This reflects King & Tuckfield’s commitment to fabrics chosen for longevity, practicality, and everyday use rather than excess.
